Standardized Assessments for the Management of Children with Motor Disorders

objective

Free distribution of detailed instructions on reliable and valid methods for the assessment of children with motor disorders. Assessments will include: The Hypertonia Assessment Tool (HAT), Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS), Tardieu Scale (TS), Observational Gait Scale (OGS), Goal Attainment Scale (GAS) and Physician Global Assessment (PGA).

background

During the course of conducting clinical drug trials for abobotulinumtoxinA (Dysport®) for FDA approval for an indication for upper and lower limb spasticity in children with cerebral palsy, a critical need of selecting and standardizing assessments across countries/facilities/investigators became a challenging imperative. The investigators spent years selecting tools, developing protocols, creating educational videos, testing and refining assessment methods, creating an App, and conducting training sessions to increase the reliability and validity of data. To enhance clinical care and research efforts, the investigators have proposed sharing these standardized protocols and training methods with health care providers across the globe.

assessments

Hypertonia Assessment Tool

A discriminative measure of the different types of hypertonia (i.e. spasticity, dystonia, and rigidity).

Modified Ashworth Scale

Measurement of hypertonia.

Tardieu Scale

Assessment of spasticity, defined as a velocity-dependent muscle resistance to stretch.

Goal Attainment Scale

Functional scale used to measure the extent of progress towards individual goals during the course of an intervention.

Observational Gait Scale

Visual rating of gait parameters from video recordings utilizing a structured scale.

Physician Global Assessment

Subjective overall measurement of treatment response based on achievement of treatment goals, change in impairment, limitations of activity, and restrictions in participation.
